Counties with Confirmed COVID-19 Cases
In this video animation:
A map of all counties in the 50 United States and D.C. is displayed. The map distinguishes metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties and shows county rates of COVID-19 cases over time from July 2020 to March 2023
The animated map initially updates at two-week intervals and gradually reduces to daily intervals by the end of the display. Early rates of infection appear to grow slowly, but are somewhat hidden by the need for the map to accommodate much higher rates of infection in later months. Between August 2021 and June 2022, the nonmetropolitan infection rate surpassed the metropolitan rate. Some of the most dramatic increases in infection rates started in January 2022 and lasted through spring 2022. By the end of the public health emergency (May 2023) the metropolitan infection rate was 3,158 cases per 10,000 population and the nonmetropolitan infection rate was 3,109 cases per 10,000 population.
